My printmaking practice focuses on hand burnished, environmentally friendly techniques. Hand burnishing is a method of producing a print without the use of a printing press. The impression from the block or plate is transferred using a bamboo baren; a Japanese hand held printing pad or a wooden spoon. My aim is to introduce students to a variety of techniques which can be easily continued anywhere; all that is required is a table, water and each individual’s creativity. All workshops are small groups, so early booking is advised. A deposit of 50% of total cost is required to secure a booking. Deposits are non refundable if a booking is cancelled two days prior to the workshop.
Workshops for Teens – Adults
Saturday 14th APRIL – Drawing, Design and Mokuhanga
Drawing, Design and Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock print)
This one day workshop focuses on black and white images and begins with experimental drawing and mark making using a variety of tools and materials. The drawings are developed into designs suitable for carving into birch plywood blocks.
The carved woodblocks are then printed onto a variety of papers, producing a series of black and white prints 15 x 15 cm.
Mokuhanga is an environmentally friendly ancient Japanese technique using water based inks and hand burnishing (no need for a printing press) making this an accessible method to continue at home.
Suitable for complete beginners or those with some previous experience.
All materials are supplied but students are asked to bring visual ideas in the form of drawings or photographs.
Saturday 21st APRIL – Monoprint and Japanese Stab Binding (book making)
Monoprint and Japanese Stab Binding
This one day workshop begins with Monoprint, often described as the painterly print. Students will explore colour, texture (fabric, foliage, textured paper etc.) and mark making. Printing by hand (no need for a printing press), using water based inks, acetate sheets and a variety of papers, students will create their own covers for books.
Books will be made using the technique of Japanese stab binding, a hand stitched method, and students will create their own personal book(s).
Once the skills are learnt, students can continue to make more books at home!
Suitable for complete beginners or those with some previous experience.
All materials are supplied, but please feel free to bring additional texture to print from if you wish.
Saturday 28th APRIL – Mark Making and Collage
Mark Making and Collage
This one day workshop explores the possibilities of mark making using a variety of tools and materials. It is an exciting and therapeutic introduction to drawing for those with no experience, or for those who just want to loosen up! The drawings will be developed into designs (max A4) and collages will be created using recycled papers and materials.
Collage is derived from the French word coller which means to glue and is a layering of thoughts and ideas using various materials to create two dimensional art pieces.
Suitable for complete beginners or those with some previous experience.
All materials are supplied, but please feel free to bring additional recycled materials if you wish.
